The Other End

"Hello?"

There's a long pause as I wait for him to say anything, but he eventually does, and of course its short, brief, and to the point.

"I know you're not feeling up for seeing the family tonight, but we really miss you. How are you doing?"

I haven't seen him since he got out, and I know he's a mess. I can't possibly imagine what he's going through. But really, I can, because I was there for most of it.

"Well, that's good! How much are you making?"

I know it's not nearly enough, and he's not going to be able to support himself. I fell like that should fall on me, but I know he's too proud to ask for help.
